Get to know: Community Futures North Central Development

Community Futures North Central Development is an economic development corporation that supports communities in northern Manitoba by offering resources for entrepreneurship and economic development. Manitoba’s 16 Community Futures corporations deliver a variety of services including loans and technical and advisory services for small and medium-sized businesses, services targeted to youth and entrepreneurs with disabilities, and community economic development and planning. Jessie Golem spoke with Michelle Pruder about their Green Resilience Project community conversation that took place in northern Manitoba in January.

West Kootenay EcoSociety is a non-profit community-driven organization that brings together local residents to protect the natural environment while building just, equitable, healthy, and livable communities. Get to know: Ecology North

Ecology North is a charitable, non-profit organization based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada that was formed in 1971 to support sound environmental decision-making on an individual, community and regional level. Ecology North maintains collaborative partnerships with a number of other local community and educational organizations to promote public education, sustainable living and climate change adaptation and mitigation on environmental initiatives. Jessie Golem recently sat down with project officer Richelle Castillo to talk learn more about Ecology North and their participation in the Green Resilience Project.

Get to know: Columbia Institute

The Columbia Institute is an independent public policy think tank based in British Columbia. Their mission is to foster and support leadership for inclusive, equitable and sustainable communities across Canada. They believe that communities who value social justice, the environment and strong local economies are healthier and happier places to live. In December, engagement coordinator Jessie Golem sat down with Kevin Millsip and Isabella Johnson to discuss the Columbia Institute’s community conversation for local electeds in BC.

Get to know: Joli Scheidler

One of the vocal supporters and advocates for those on the Ontario Basic Income Pilot is Joli Scheidler. She is based in Lindsay, ON and is hosting several Green Resilience Project community conversations in the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton County and Brock Township. Joli is a PhD Candidate at York University in Health Policy and Equity, Sessional Instructor for Ontario Tech University and the Research Project Manager for SSHRC funded research focused on Basic Income involving four university partners. Joli’s research for Basic Income Canada Network was used in the report Signposts to Success that analyzed early results of the Ontario Basic Income pilot.

The Transition House Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is a voluntary, nonprofit community-based organization whose mandate is to strengthen and support the network of provincially funded shelters and services for women – with or without children – affected by relationship violence. Get to know: The Conservation Council of New Brunswick

The Conservation Council of New Brunswick has been at the forefront of conservation and environmental issues in the province since 1969. We are excited that they have agreed to partner with the Green Resilience Project to host a conversation in Fredericton in January 2022. Our engagement coordinator Jessie Golem recently had the opportunity to speak with Adam Mahoney about CCNB’s work. Currently, much of it is focused on  the province’s transition to clean and green energy sources and how that transition will affect individuals, industries and the environment, as well as issues people are facing regarding accessing affordable and reliable electricity.

Explainer: What is a basic income?

Basic income has a long history in Canada. From a basic income pilot that took place in rural Manitoba in the 1970s to a recent and prematurely cancelled pilot that took place in Ontario in 2017-18, basic income has grown from a trendy economic idea to one that is currently being discussed and debated at the highest levels of government. So what is it?
